What is diac and how does it work? Working of DIAC As soon as the supply voltage whether positive or negative is applied across the terminals of a diac , only a small leakage current flows through the device. So the device operates in either forward or reverse blocking modes.


Diac working

A DIAC is a diode that conducts electrical current only after its breakover voltage (V BO) has been reached. DIACs are used in the triggering of thyristors. DIAC stands for “Diode for Alternating Current ”. The word DIAC consists of two parts, DI and AC.


Difference Between DIAC and TRIAC – Working and Characteristics There are several applications where it is preferred to regulate the power fed to a load. For instance: using electrical methods controlling the speed of a motor or fan. DIAC means Diode Alternating current.


Diac working

This is a type of diode that works in both reverse and forward bias. This diode work on the complete cycle of AC means this work during a positive half-cycle and also during a negative half cycle of the AC waveform. DIAC Working Principle The above image shows the clear operation of the DIAC with respe! DIAC is two terminal four layer semiconductor device (Thyristors) that can conduct current in either direction, when polarity is active.


The basic construction and symbol of DIAC is shown in above diagram. A DIAC is a full-wave or bi-directional semiconductor switch that can be turned on in both forward and reverse polarities. The name DIAC comes from the words DI ode AC switch. The DIAC (diode for alternating current) is a diode that conducts electrical current only after its breakover voltage, V BO, has been reached momentarily.

Working of the DIAC DIAC can be turned on by either the positive and negative half cycle of the AC supply voltage. If the applied voltage is less than the forward breakover voltage, the small amount of current will flow the device. This current is known as the leakage current. A diac is an important member of the thyristor family and is usually employed for triggering triacs.


A diac is a two-electrode bidirectional avalanche diode which can be switched from off-state to the on-state for either polarity of the applied voltage. This is just like a triac without gate terminal, as shown in figure. The triac’s triggering voltage is derived from the VR– Ccombination via the Diac (The diac is a bidirectional semiconductor device that helps provide a sharp trigger current pulse to fully turn-ON the triac). At the start of each cycle, Ccharges up via the variable resistor, VR1. The lamp dimmer circuits use a Diac to give triggering pulse to the gate. So when the capacitor inside the Triac discharges through the Diac , the Back lash effect develops.


This can be rectified by using a Resistor in series with the Diac or by adding a capacitor between the Gate and the MTterminal of Triac.
